  1. A 20 year female with 36 weeks pregnancy presents for the first evaluation.She is diagnosed Chlamydia trachomatis infection of cervix.Upon delivery,what complaint is the infant most at risk for ?
    a.Jaundice
    b.Hydrocephalus.
    c.Hutchinson triad
    d.Conjunctivitis.
    E.Sensoryneural deafness.

    Ans : D
    Chlamydia can also be associated with pnuemonia and Otitis media.
    Hydrocephalus can be associated with toxoplasmosis.

Hutchinson triad - (i)Hutchinson teeth (blunted upper incisors)
(ii)Interstetial keratitis
(iii)Eighth nerve deafness.
This triad is seen in congenital syphilis.
Sensorineural deafness is associated with Congenital rubella exposure.

Treatment - Oral Erythromycin.

Pemphigus Vulgaris

Pemphigus vulgaris is a blistering autoimmune skin lesion mostly seen in elderly patients.The disorder is characterised by a process called Acanthoysis (loss of cohesion between epidermal cells).Lesions are mostly flaccid blisters over the skin.These blisters burst out and the surounding skin gets denuded.In severe cases, substantial portions of the body get denuded.Manual pressue over these blisters can cause separation of epidermis.This is known as Nikolsky's sign. This finding is a characteristic feature of Pemphigus vulgaris but not the specific feature. Nikolsky's sign is also seen in Stevens Johnson Syndrome, Toxic epidermal necrolysis and few other skin conditions. Amygdalin is a compound found in seeds of all fruits except those of citrus fruits. It is found in high amounts in Apricot kernels and Almonds.  Anti-tumor properties of Amygdalin have been discussed and argued over and over through out the cancer research circles. A quick google search of 'Amygdalin' will tell you that it is a 'quack medicine', that it has no action on cancer cells and that it is dangerously poisonous substance.
