Bilirubin, Blood Surface Tension and Ibn Sina.

It is said that nothing in this world was created without a purpose. Everything we see around us is in one way or another useful. What have we, as medical students and professionals, always been told about bilirubin? That is a byproduct in the degradation of heme and helps in iron cycle in the body. That if its serum level is more than 1.0 to 1.2 mg/dL, it is called jaundice. Then we talk about Kernicterus, Dubin Johnson's, Rotor's, Crigler najjar Syndromes etc etc, disorders of bilirubin. On the whole, bilirubin is considered as a marker of hepatic disease. But what we are not taught is the purpose of bilirubin. In our medical curriculum, we immerse ourselves in blood levels of substances, lab tests, drug treatment and we tend to overlook simple basics of Medicine. In spring 2016, I had got my hands on a commentary of Ibn Sina's (Avicenna) 'Canon of Medicine' (Al Qanun Fil Tibb). Considered as one of the most authentic and all time greats in the history of Med...

Where is your Mind?

Where is the Mind in human body? Is it in the brain? or in the heart? Brain and Heart are nothing but organs present in the human body. Do they contain 'Mind'?  What do we imply when we say 'Mind'? Generally speaking 'Mind' implies intelligence, intellect, focus, analytical ability etc. Let us pose a question that will simplify our previous question. You remember those unicellular organisms? with cellwall and one nucleus. Primitive life forms we are told? Are they 'mindless' organisms roaming around invisible to our eyes? Or are they intelligent enough to search and find their food, retract back from pain, identify hostile environments. The answer is obvious, they are intelligent and they do have mind. So where is its mind when it don't even have a Heart or Brain or even a neuron for that matter? Now let us pose another question: What is mind? Is it intellect? or Is it our memories? Our cognitive, analytical skills? It is quite hard to define ...

Story of Vitamin B17/Amygdalin/Laetrile/ and Cancer

Amygdalin is a compound found in seeds of all fruits except those of citrus fruits. It is found in high amounts in Apricot kernels and Almonds.  Anti-tumor properties of Amygdalin have been discussed and argued over and over through out the cancer research circles. A quick google search of 'Amygdalin' will tell you that it is a 'quack medicine', that it has no action on cancer cells and that it is dangerously poisonous substance. Laetrile is the name of semi-synthetic (drug- tablet and injection) form of amygdalin available in the market.  Let me present the readers with PubMed articles - published data in prestigious peer reviewed journals, regarding the anti-tumor properties of Amygdalin. Links will be provided with each statement. Amygdalin has anti-tumor tumor properties. It has antitussive and antiasthamatic effects. It has apoptotic effect on Renal Fibroblasts- helpful in chronic kidney disease. It stimulates the immune system and acts as an analg...

Hypothyroidism

I have been asked by friends to do an article about Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism means thyroid gland which is under functioning and therefore deficiency of Thyroid hormone is seen with resultant increased TSH. Here I am posting all the important information that I can get on this topic. Allopathic view of the reasons for thyroid disorders is "idiopathic" meaning- don't know. So lets look at what a naturopath or holopathic practitioner has to say about hypothyroidism. The causes of Thyroid disorder or of any endocrine disorder for that matter can vary over a wide range of issues. These can include: Imbalances of blood-sugar levels affecting energy metabolism.  Digestive disturbances, e.g., deficiency of enzymes, causing abdominal bloating and undigested food molecules leaking through the gut wall to trigger an inappropriate immune system response.  Imbalance of the detoxification functions of the liver resulting in an increase of toxic compounds which may irritat...

Green Tea

Camellia Sinensis is the botanical name given to what is popularly known as Green Tea. Basically we get a dry extract of this plant which is used as an decaffeinated tea. Green tea is a Chinese herb, known to the Chinese from hundreds of years. It is rich in Polyphenols (around 40 to 50% by weight) and Catechins . Brief Summary of actions and properties of Green Tea: Antioxidant activity and scavenging free radicals. Stimulation of detoxification centers and systems. Selective induction and modification of metabolic enzymes in such a way that greater amounts of metabolites are formed and excreted from the body. Inhibition of factors that activate and develop the tumor. Ability to induce severe apoptosis (cell death) of neoplastic cells alone. This has been proved in AML (a kind of blood cancer), Skin cancer cells and Prostate cancer cells. Ability to stop abnormal cell growth- acting at the level of growth receptors and factors. Inhibition of gelatinase which is respo...

Quercetin in Detail

Red Onions are rich in Quercetin. These onions are especially high in Quercetin, a bioflavonoid.  These are what give apples their color. Onions, garlic, tea, red grapes, berries, broccoli, and leafy greens are also rich sources of quercetin.  Bioflavonoids are water-soluble compounds. In humans, bio-flavonoids maintain resistance of capillary walls to permeation and change of pressure, and have synergistic antioxidant effects with vitamin C. What Experts have to say about Quercetin: “Indicators suggest quercetin may help performance in athletes and may help also improve our cognitive performance, or brain alertness. I strongly encourage you to look into quercetin.” -Dr. Daniel Johnston Preventive Medicine, Department of Defense, US Military, Comprehensive Soldier Fitness   “Quercetin exerts strong anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-pathogenic, and immune regulatory effects in vitro and in animal-based studies. Epidemiological data indicates reduced rates of ...

Natural help for Ovarian Cancer- Tony Isaacs

Tony Isaacs is a well known Naturopathic advocate for the treatment of Cancer and other Chronic debilitating diseases which are conventionally called "untreatable." Tony Isaacs had developed Oleander protocol for Cancer treatment, which is lethal to cancer cells but non-toxic to normal cells in low doses. Oleander Protocol will be posted later. Right now we will review quickly, how Ovarian cancer patients can be helped with natural methods. 1. Agaricus Blazei Murril Mushroom (ABM mushrooms) : Stimulates T Lymphocytes production. The polysaccharide in ABM stimulates Interferon and Interleukin. It is a powerful antiviral. 2. Selenium-  Methylselenocysteine is most effect form of Selenium against cancer cells. 3. Curcumin-   Found in turmeric has broad spectrum anticancer properties. It is well absorbed if taken with milk. For Ovarian cancer patients, who can not take milk, they can add it to vegetable juices for better absorption. 4. Vitamin K-   Found in gre...

Mitigating Chemotherapy Side Effects

Supplements, moderate exercises and eating the right diet can help reduce the drastic adverse effects of Chemotherapy. People taking chemotherapy for cancer should start supplements days or weeks before starting of the chemo and continue several days after the chemo has finished. I am listing a few supplements that have shown promising results in many cancer patients world wide. Detailed articles about each supplement will be written later. Vitamin E, Vitamin C, N- Acetyl Cysteine: Help against Heart muscle toxicity of chemotherapy. Vitamin C increases the anit-neoplasic activity of chemo drugs-especially Cisplatin, Paclitaxel and Adriamycin. Patients taking Vitamin C need less pain killers and have good appetite. Vitamin E is used with Vitamin A, Co Q10. Vitamin E also potentiates chemotherapy drugs' efficacy. In addition, Vitamin E induces Tumor Supressor Protien P21. The dry poder succinate is most beneficial for cancer patients. More common Acetate form is ineffective in sl...
