Food additives are chemicals that are added to industrial packaged foods to preserve its taste, texture, color, smell or to extend its shelf life. While the food additives achieve these goals, they inadvertently and inevitably cause a lot of damage to our health. This is because the food industry's interests lie in making profits, not in health of the public. Some researchers have linked these food additives to chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, hyper activity and attention deficits in children, various autoimmune diseases (and other immunity related disorders) and cancer. Today more than 10,000 chemicals make their way into our foods- many without any FDA scrutiny.
More than 10k chemicals are in our foods.
In fact the Center for Food Safety had sued the FDA in 2014 for its "unlawful action of exempting substances that are 'generally recognized as safe' (GRAS) from regulations as food additives under a proposed rule for more than 15 years." The FDA literally allowed the additive makers to determine whether their products are safe or not. In 1958, American Congress passed a law requiring FDA to conduct premarket reviews of food additives and approve or reject them based on scientific evidence. But the corrupt higher ups in the FDA found a way to get around this through GRAS. For example 'common' food additives like sugar, gelatin and other additives which had 'published studies' (paid for by the food industry of course) backing their safety were regarded as 'Generally Recognized As Safe' by the FDA, thereby exempting FDA's scientific review and approval of these substances.

A list of substances which are deemed as Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA:
- Sulphuric anhydride (E220): "derived from coal tar; all sulphur drugs are toxic and restricted in use (in USA, FDA** prohibits their use on raw fruits and vegetables), produced by combustion of sulphur or gypsum; known to provoke asthma attacks and difficult to metabolise for those with impaired kidney function, also destroys vitamin B1; typical products are beer, soft drinks, dried fruit, juices, cordials, wine, vinegar, potato products."- Click Here. Not recommended for children-Click Here. Can induce an Asthma attack in asthmatics- Click Here. Industrial Foods containing Sulfur products- Click Here.
- Difenil (E230): Acute Effects include Flaccid Paralysis. Click Here.
- Potassium nitrite (E249): Gun powder and Fireworks material. Used as a preservative in cured meat, cheese and toothpaste. "Potassium nitrate can pose a number of health risks. When inhaled, it may cause respiratory problems, including coughing and shortness of breath. Skin or eye contact may result in irritation such as redness, itching and pain. If ingested, a number of problems can occur, including blue lips and fingernails, abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mallinckrodt Baker Chemicals advises that workers wear masks, gloves and safety goggles when handling potassium nitrate powder. First aid measures involve removing exposed persons to fresh air, flushing any areas of contact with water, inducing vomiting if potassium nitrate ingestion has occurred, and seeking immediate medical attention."- Click Here. Full details of its toxicity from National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health (cdc.gov link): Click Here.
- Sodium nitrite (E250): Its a fatal poison- "Sodium nitrite is a powerful oxidizing agent that causes hypotension and limits oxygen transport and delivery in the body through the formation of methemoglobin. Clinical manifestations can include cyanosis, hypoxia, altered consciousness, dysrhythmias, and death."- Click Here.
- Sodium nitrate (251),
- Potassium nitrate (252),
- Erythorbic acid (E315): Aka Isoascorbic acid or D-Araboascorbic acid. It can cause kidney stones, trigger gout, fatigue and hemolysis.- Click Here. In animal studies it had shown atrophy of liver cells, splenic lymphoid follicles and hydropic degeneration of renal tubular epithelial cells- Click Here. The FDA recognized it as GRAS.
- Butyl hydroquinone (E319): Possible mutagen and carcinogen- Click Here. Listed as prohibited or restricted cosmetic agent in Canada- Click Here. But considered safe as food additive by FDA! Not suspected or expected to be toxic or harmful and not suspected to be bioaccumulative by Environment Canada Domestic Substances List- Click Here.
- BHA (E230), BHT (E231): Banned in some countries. Used for agricultural purposes for citrus fruits and some vegetables- Click Here. Its a potential carcinogen- Click Here and Here.
- Polyphosphates (E450): Potential bone and cardiovascular toxicity (dose related)- Click Here.
- Monoglycerides and Dyglycerides of fatty acids (E471): "Trans fats have been associated with increased risk of numerous diseases, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes. They promote inflammation and obesity, raise LDL cholesterol levels and lower HDL cholesterol levels. Made up in part of fatty acids, mono- and diglycerides may contain trans fats, either when manufactured in a lab, or if they come from an animal or vegetable sources, when exposed to heat for processing into packaged and prepared foods." Click Here.
- Esters of mono and dyglycerides of fatty acids (E472),
- Esters of saccharides of fatty acids (473),
- HCl (E507): Known toxic, known acid.
- KCl E508): "Serious side effects of potassium include uneven heartbeat, muscle weakness or limp feeling, severe stomach pain, and numbness or tingling in your hands, feet, or mouth." Click Here.
- CaCl (E509): Skin and Eye irritant. When ingested in large quantities its harmful. Click Here.
- Ammonium chloride (E510): Found to be lethal to fish. Human data not available. Click Here.
- MgCl (E511): Neuromuscular transmission suppressing effects on CNS. Click Here.
- Acesulphane potassium (E950): Insufficient studies were done on its safety- Click Here. "Methylene chloride is used as a solvent in the manufacturing process of acesulfame potassium, can lead to side effects such as
Headaches, Liver complications, Mental confusion, Cancerous developments, Visual impairment and Renal diseases. Methylene chloride is used in paint stripper, degreaser and propellant gas. Long-term exposure to methylene chloride can cause headaches, depression, nausea, diarrhea, mental confusion, liver effects, kidney effects, visual disturbances, and cancer in humans."- Click Here. - Aspartame (E951): Most controversial artificial sweetener. Potential carcinogen. Click Here.
- Cyclamic acid (E952): Shown to cause bladder cancer and testicular atrophy in mice- Click Here.
- Saccharine (E954): First artificial sweetener. It was banned in 1970s because of causing bladder cancer in rats. Click Here.
- “Natural” aromatic herbs (synthetic, in actual fact), artificial aromatic herbs, flavour enhancers or added sugars.
Most of the above substances were declared 'safe' based on assumptions and shady 'researches' (obviously funded by the food industry), without any concrete randomized placebo control trails. The corruption in FDA and CDC is well known today. The truth of so called 'peer reviewed' studies and journals is horrifying. The food industry has found ways and legal loopholes to get around FDA regulations. Around 1000 chemicals are being added in the foods without even notifying the FDA. FDA labelling has no credibility anymore.
Moreover, no serious studies have been conducted to see if these chemicals accumulate in body organs and cause toxicity/chronic diseases in the long run. No studies have been done to look at how these chemicals affect our metabolism and how our body metabolizes them. Or can our body metabolize these chemicals completely at all? Under these circumstances its best to stick to home cooked traditional foods and to avoid all kinds of packaged foods.
